Dear Koala lovers!
With the closing date for submissions for the New South Wales Koala Strategy and the draft of the South-East Queensland Regional Plan both falling on 3rd March, the Australian Koala Foundation has once again written to the relevant Ministers to highlight our major concerns.
My letter to the Hon Jacklyn Trad , QLD Minister for Infrastructure and Planning, includes a full graphical analysis of the habitat destruction that encompasses the current SEQ Regional Plan. With this plan due to lock in development of the landscape for the next 50 years, the situation is truly dire for the Koala, who is already acknowledged by Queensland Environment Minister Stephen Miles to be “functionally extinct”.
I have also written once again to NSW Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton regarding the availability of AKF Koala Habitat Atlas mapping for nearly 70% of the New South Wales landscape. This data is essential to the development of a suitable Koala Strategy for the state.
Please take the time to read these letters, and if you haven’t yet made your own submissions I would urge you to do so, before it is literally too late for our beloved Koala.
Fondest regards,
Deborah
