Copy & Paste and email to the Prime Minister asking for the Koala Protection Act:
Dear Prime Minister,
As a member of the Australian Koala Foundation’s Koala Army, I am writing to ask you to implement the Koala Protection Act.
Our scientists and researchers have identified 20% of the continent as koala habitat. This land also plays host to sugar gliders, kangaroos and countless other species. To protect this vital habitat, we propose the implementation of species-specific legislation. The Koala Protection Act is an evidence-backed solution to ensure our precious flora and fauna are not unwittingly eradicated in the pursuit of profit and development. Our proposed laws ought not to be feared by companies that wish to operate in a respectful and sustainable manner.
When people think of Australia, they conjure up imagery of vast, untouched landscapes and unique, fascinating creatures. Visitors from overseas have an endless desire to visit places like Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef, and to have authentic encounters with animals like koalas, kangaroos and quokkas. As the Prime Minister of this country, why can’t you see that protecting our natural landscape is an issue of utmost importance?
The current federal legislation, the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act, has proven ineffective, as noted in an Independent Review by Professor Graeme Samuel, contributing to the decline in Koala populations. The preservation of wildlife habitat is paramount, and the Koala Protection Act is the solution. The shortcomings of the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act are obvious. Urban development, land clearing, logging, and infrastructure projects continue to raze key habitat across the continent. The Koala Protection Act places responsibility on companies to prove that their activity is benign. This shift in environmental law will be revolutionary.
During your second term as Prime Minister, you have the power and ability to change the way we treat this country’s most iconic resource – Australian flora and fauna. We implore you to support the Koala Protection Act in the name of a brighter future for the creatures that call this country home.
I am confident that Deborah Tabart, OAM, Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation will be pleased to meet with you and your staff to explain why this will work for the Koala.
